The main appeal, I think, of things like thigh high stockings and corsets is the intimacy of putting them on or taking them off--the ritual, the closeness to the skin, to thigh. The tension of a tie the could fall at any moment or a strap fall off a shoulder.  A little rococo dandy in a jeweled box, to be gazed at as he dresses and undresses to please.
